Marcus Wright, an Eminence, Kentucky (Eminence High School) native, was not recruited to play football. The 5’11”, 175 lb. Marcus, was a walk on as a freshman and earned a partial scholarship from Coach Leroy Smith. He played his final year under Coach Fred Farrier.
Marcus started his career at KSU as a wide receiver and kick/punt returner. As a sophomore, he had an impressive season as a wide receiver. He had 11 receptions for 167 yards with 2 touchdowns. During the end of his sophomore season, he switched to the defensive side of the ball as a defensive back. He was able to showcase a new skill set and the rest is history as he became one of the best defensive backs at KSU.
During Marcus junior year, he was nationally ranked in several categories: 23rd in Interceptions (6 for 150 yards & 1 Touchdown); 10th in Punt Returns; and 5th in Kickoff Returns. These statistics earned him SIAC First Team All-Conference honors as a defensive back. Also, he was selected to the All-Southeast Region team as a Defensive Back. He still was able to contribute as a wide receiver as he had 4 receptions for 129 yards with 3 touchdowns. That was an average of 33.2 yards per catch.
In 2005, Marcus senior season, he was considered one of the best football players in the nation. His NCAA Division 2 national rankings was so impressive, it earned him First team All-American Special Teams (Kick/Punt Return) honors. His national rankings were: 6th in Interceptions (8 for 137 yards); 2nd in Punt Returns; 28th in Kickoff Returns; 40th in All Purpose yards; and 2nd in Pass Defense. These stats earned him two SIAC honors, All-Conference Defense as a defensive back and All-Conference Special Teams (Punt/Kick Returns). He was selected to the SBN Black College All-American Team of defensive.
Marcus was selected player of the week in the SIAC three times and the SIAC Defensive Player of the week twice, during his senior year. At one point as a senior, he not only led the SIAC, but also the NCAA Division 2, in Interceptions, Pass Defensive, and Punt/Kick Returns at the same time. He was known to blanket every wide receiver that came his way. As a return specialist, he nearly always provided excellent field position for the Thorobreds.
Marcus career punt returns stats were: 75 returns for 1,179 yards, 15.7 average per return. This makes him the 15th All-Time on the NCAA Division 2 Punt return list.
He earned three Athletic Letters in his career and several KSU Defensive awards, including Defensive MVP as a senior.
Marcus topped off his career as he was selected to the “Whataburger Division II Cactus Bowl East Squad” as a Defensive Back that was held in Kingsville, Texas.
Marcus is currently residing in Eminece, Kentucky. He has a daughter, Enyah. He is employed with Sicosa Corporation.
